Forge is a program which gives access to the Essence textures used in the
Imagine program. It allows you to use these procedural textures, giving a
great deal of control over their various parameters, so you can generate
images (or sequences of images for animated textures) which can be used in
Lightwave as image maps. It also provides a mini screen which shows you the
texture you are working on as you vary its parameters. They are very good.
It can, however, take quite a while to generate a single 752x480 image (on
the order of 1/2 hour or more without antialiasing). The new VTU has an
article on LW 3.5, and it shows some samples of a few of the Essence
textures, which are being included in this and future versions of LW (I
think only two "crippled" textures are included with LW 3.5).
